ASAJAYA: The water supply capacity from Asajaya to Simunjan is set to increase, benefitting more than 83,500 residents as the Slabi Water Treatment Plant in Serian is set to distribute treated water in the area.
Minister for Utility and Communication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi outlined his ministry’s proposal for the plant to supply water from Asajaya to Gedong, including Simunjan, with the aim of boosting water production capacity in rural areas.
“This means that the area will now have two sources of treated and clean water, namely from the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant and the Slabi Water Treatment Plant in Serian.”
Julaihi was speaking to the media following a site visit to the Asajaya Water High Tank here on Friday (Jan 26).
On another note, he mentioned ongoing upgrades at the Batu Kitang No. 2 and No. 4 treatment plants, set to increase daily water production capacity to 998 million litres.
The Slabi Water Treatment Plant in Serian, currently operating at 70 million litres of treated water with a total capacity of 110 million litres, is also part of this expansion initiative.
“Through the implementation of various water supply projects in the state, issues related to treated water supply, especially in rural areas, are being addressed.”
Julaihi noted the impact of the People’s Water Supply Project Package 2A, valued at about RM185mil, in Asajaya and Sadong Jaya.
“This project has significantly improved the water supply system in areas facing shortages and low water pressure during peak hours.”
Regarding the Asajaya Water High Tank project, he mentioned its substantial increase in water storage capacity.
“In the past, we could store 2.5 million litres per day; now it has increased to 20 million litres.”
The project, completed in April of last year, is still under the defect liability period (DLP) until April of this year.
Julaihi expressed gratitude for the positive impact of the project, overcoming the issue of water shortages for village residents.
He noted improved water pressure and distribution in the area, extending to Sebuyau, Sebangan, Sadong Jaya, and Simunjan, effectively resolving the rural water supply challenge.
He highlighted additional project components, including the construction of Tangki Aras Tinggi in Tambirat, Moyan Laut, Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Semera, and Sungai Buloh 2, along with Pump Stations in Tambirat, Asajaya, and Sg Buloh, and the installation of new pipelines spanning 42.2km.
“These initiatives form part of the Water Supply Grid System, aimed at enhancing the existing water supply system and improving the socioeconomic status and quality of life for residents in the involved areas,” Julaihi added.
