MIRI: A female student of a higher learning institution here lost RM5,000 after being duped by a stranger who offered high paying part-time jobs online.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim, in her twenties, spotted an advertisement on a Facebook page offering a job with lucrative commissions.

“The task given was simple, all she needed to do was to make some payments and increase the rating for a product,” Alexson said.

The victim was told that she would get paid for each of the tasks.

Alexson added the victim had made a total of five payments totalling RM5,000 to three different bank account numbers provided by the suspect before realising she had been cheated.

A police report was made last Monday.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
