KUCHING: Sarawak has expressed readiness to collaborate with the European Union (EU) in the distribution and supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it can be implemented should there be any demand for it from the EU.
He said this was also one of the matters discussed with the Ambassador of the EU to Malaysia, Michalis Rokas previously.
“When I met His Excellency, there was a war going on in Europe. We were talking about distribution and disruption of gas. There is potential for us to provide our LNG to the EU.
“So, welcome if you want to have LNG from Sarawak,” he said in his speech during the launch of InvestSarawak and EU Business Day 2024 networking dinner here last night (Feb 14).
Abang Johari stressed the Sarawak government’s commitment to assist global efforts in reducing carbon emissions, underscoring the need for increased collaboration with the EU.
He highlighted the significance of combining hydrogen, hydropower, wind, and solar energy to mitigate the greenhouse effect.
“…and the Sarawak government is implementing this. We cannot do it alone. You (EU) have the experience and technology and you can just explore which area you can assist us. And subsequently, you can assist the world (mitigating climate change).
“It is not for Sarawak, not for the EU, but for humanity. That is the objective of the Sarawak government,” he said.
On technological advancements, the Premier urged the EU to share its latest knowledge with Sarawak, and proposed sending students to countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands to pursue studies in relevant fields.
“I hope our collaboration will be fruitful and I welcome any potential collaboration between the EU and us,” he said.
Among those present were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Ambassador Rokas, Minister of Women, Early Childhood, Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Naraw, State Secretary Datuk Amar Abu Bakar Marzuki, and InvestSarawak chief executive officer Timothy Ong.
