BINTULU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for continuous efforts to foster unity and development.
He praised the inclusive nature of Sarawak, noting its diversity of religious backgrounds.
As such, Abang Johari commended Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming’s initiative to request the construction of a multipurpose hall and surau, highlighting it as a testament to Sarawak’s unique spirit of inclusivity and unity.
“He (Pang) aims to develop the youth in the fields of sports and education. Therefore, he proposed the construction of a multipurpose hall near Suarah Hall valued at RM25mil. This is for the benefit of the youth here.
“He also requested the building of a surau for SK Assyakirin. That’s the spirit. This is what makes Sarawak unique. We care for all communities here. That’s why we have Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) for other religions.”
He was speaking at the Chinese New Year open house hosted by the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bintulu today (Feb 15).
Earlier, Pang put forward a proposal for a multipurpose hall, intended to cater to the needs of youths and active seniors in Bintulu.
He noted the potential benefits of such a facility, foreseeing enhanced opportunities for sporting achievements in the community.
Additionally, Phang proposed the construction of a surau for SK Assyakirin.
Recognising the significance of providing a religious space for Muslim students and community members, he underscored the importance of this initiative. The estimated cost for the surau is about RM1.5mil.
