KUCHING: Two Indonesians were sentenced to five months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court here on Friday (Feb 16) for their involvement in operating gambling devices.
Tutut, 25, and Suriyadi, 34, pleaded guilty to the charge read before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
The charge stated that they jointly operated gambling devices, including a television set, eight top-up chips, and 20 slot machines at a shop in a shopping centre in Jalan Penrissen around 12.45am on Feb 4.
They were charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
During the incident, a police team from the Padawan District Criminal Investigation Department conducted a raid on a premises suspected of conducting gambling activities. The two accused, who are the premises caretakers, were detained during the raid.
Seized items from the premises included a television set, eight top-up chips, 20 slot machines, two pieces of daily income record paper, a modem, and RM7,590 in cash.
According to gambling experts involved in the investigation, the seized items were machines used for activities such as Sun Wukong gambling.
The case was prosecuted by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang while both defendants were not represented by a lawyer.
