KUCHING: The late former Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud was a visionary statesman who ardently championed the state’s development during its formative years.
Former State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Datuk Seri Robert Jacob Ridu has penned a heartfelt message of condolence to the family of the distinguished leader, who passed away earlier today.
In his poignant tribute, Ridu reminisced about Taib’s exceptional leadership, portraying him as a beacon of hope and progress for Sarawak.
He acknowledged Taib’s ability to unite diverse communities under a common vision for a modern Sarawak, a testament to his profound statesmanship.
“In every generation of human history, there are those who would rise up to the call of a country to lead. Your beloved dad (Taib) was one of those destined for leadership. His heart was envisioned to grow and transform our newly independent state in Malaysia.
“He had the conviction and courage to gather the disparate groups in our state and make them believe in his vision for modern Sarawak.
“I was one of those lucky ones to have been mentored by him and carried his vision to my own community through Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB). What a great statesman and person he was!” said Ridu to the New Sarawak Tribune.
Ridu further emphasised his personal connection to Taib, recounting their longstanding relationship dating back to 1963, when Taib served as Assistant Minister in the State Cabinet.
He fondly recalled a memorable dinner party hosted by Taib, marking the beginning of a mentorship that would significantly influence his own journey in public service.
“I was just about to go to the United Kingdom for further studies, and he invited me to a small dinner party in his government house next to RTM. The building is still there. When I came back, I renewed the connection with him. By that time, he was the Minister of Socio-Economic Planning in the Federal Cabinet,” he added.
The passing of Taib, he lamented, marks the end of an era in Sarawak’s developmental journey.
However, he asserted that Taib’s footprints in Sarawak’s developmental history remain and will be for generations to come.
As the news of Taib’s passing reverberates throughout Sarawak, Ridu extends words of comfort and encouragement to the grieving family, invoking divine guidance and peace during this difficult time.
“May you find comfort in the legacy of his big heart. The road ahead may be difficult, but take courage and have faith. May the hand of God that raised your dad to the stature that he became guide you, comfort you, and give you peace.”
