KUCHING: The Sessions Court here handed a poultry farmer six years’ imprisonment and six strokes of the cane for having a pistol without a licence.
Chia Lee Seng, 32, from Siburan, pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman on today.
He was charged under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 which provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and not less than six strokes of the cane.
He committed the offence in the parking lot in front of a hotel at King Center, at around 11.30 pm, April 12 last year.
Afidah ordered him to serve the prison sentence effective from the date of arrest on April 13.
According to the facts of the case, police conducted an inspection and found a pistol and a packet containing six bullets on his hip.
In addition, a search on the car driven by Chia led to the discovery of a police uniform and police insignia buttons.
The prosecution of the case was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim while the defendant was not represented by a lawyer.
