KUCHING: Sarawak continues to catch the attention of the world, as this time the Latin American nations want to learn from the state on how it manages the economy.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the delegates will be visiting Sarawak next week.

“Next week, the whole ambassadors of Latin America in Kuala Lumpur is coming over. They want to learn how we manage our economy through green energy,” he said  during the Chinese New Year celebration and the Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan, Serian Divisions’ 45th anniversary dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night (Feb 25).

Meanwhile, Abang Johari urged the business community to adjust its way of business to the world needs.

“The local business community has to adjust and acknowledge the fact that green energy is important.

“Green manufacturing is important. Why? Even the financial institutions all over the world want us to comply with Environmental, social and governance (ESG),” he said.

Earlier, Abang Johari said businesses cannot run as usual like they used to, adding that there is a need to change the ways of running the economy.

“Firstly, trees cannot be chopped anymore because you will lose the forest value. So, it has to be converted as a source for carbon trading or carbon sync due to the fact that the world is experiencing climate change,” he said.

He said experts are finding solutions to mitigate the greenhouse emission, especially carbon dioxide.

“Last month, we had all the ambassadors in the European Union (EU), 19 ambassadors plus their corporate leaders who came to Sarawak. Why? They know the future of Sarawak.

“This is because we are rich in resources that will mitigate carbon emission,” he said, while adding that it is the first time that ambassadors from the EU engaged with the state.

He said the EU ambassador delegates also acknowledged the state’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
