THE suspect (centre) is remanded for four days to facilitate investigation into a social media posting that allegedly defaming Kuching City traffic police.

KUCHING: A local man was arrested by police for allegedly defaming and derogating the Kuching City traffic police in his posting.

State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar Sree Shunmugam said the contract staff of the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) was picked up at around 1.00am yesterday from his house.

The suspect has been remanded for four days to facilitate police investigation, he added.

Dev Kumar said initial investigation revealed the 37-year-old man had warned the public not to come to the Stadium Perpaduan Sarawak or risked being issued with summonses by the traffic police.

The stadium is the venue of the ongoing Malaysia Celcom Axiata Open Badminton Championships.

Dev Kumar said at 10.15pm on Saturday, the police received a report lodged against the suspect who used the name ‘Amirul Esok’.

“Our investigations revealed that the suspect was earlier issued a traffic summons for driving a vehicle without a valid driving licence near the stadium and he was bitter about it,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

The case is being investigated under the Communications and Multimedia Act.
Dev Kumar also warned the public, especially the netizens, to avoid making any defamatory, derogatory and seditious statements.

“So far, 20 people in Sarawak have been arrested this year for various online offences. We (police) will not hesitate to arrest any social media user who posts offensive statements,” he said.
