KUCHING: A passion for fashion and a strong desire to contribute to the local weaving industry using Sarawakian ethnic designs has driven budding designer Allie Jabing, 25, to succeed.

Allie, who also works in the food and beverage industry and resides in Kuching, shared her journey with New Sarawak Tribune.

“I began my business in 2022 at the Rainforest World Music Festival after attending a Catama Borneo small-business development programme. After the event, I discovered that I was interested in this field.”

The business she owns specialises in products and garments manufactured from vibrant contemporary batik textile. She operates a business part-time as well.

She currently sells her merchandise online and as a vendor at community art markets.

“Because I am the sole proprietor of this little business, I responsible for every aspect of it. I do everything; from planning interactions to maintaining a social media platform. But, at the same time, I learned a lot about every aspect of business while developing the business.”

She advertises her merchandise on social media and in person. Her clients frequently notify their friends and family about her business. She additionally uses her own apparel on a daily basis.

“The issue I usually encounter is preparing merchandise for sale. Most of the time, I am the only one who sews everything, thus my quantity is restricted. In terms of prices, when manufacturing costs increase, the price also rises.

“My family and friends have been very supportive throughout the three years. Many regular and new clients have encouraged me to keep going on this journey.”

Her dream is to make it a full-time job because she adores it tremendously. It gives her entire artistic autonomy in designing garments and accessories which she knows are attractive to others.

“Don’t be afraid to try. It’s through trial and error that you discover what works best for you. I’ve undergone numerous experiments to find my unique style.”
