KUCHING: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) chairman Safiee Ahmad recently paid a courtesy call to the Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin to seek advice and discuss future plans for the board.
The meeting took place at the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) office in Bangunan Baitulmakmur here on Wednesday (Mar 13).
Safiee, who assumed his role on January 1, 2024, aimed to gather insights from Lee regarding the ministry’s current and future plans for the Sarawak Rivers Board.
Accompanying Safiee was SRB controller Lieutenant Col Ding Tiew Wong (Rtd).
During the meeting, Lee highlighted the ministry’s vision to develop and modernise Sarawak’s navigable commercial river system as part of the transportation and logistics network.
In a statement released by MOTS on Friday (March 15), Lee expressed his expectation for closer collaboration between SRB and the ministry to promote river transportation.
“If more heavy cargoes can be transported via rivers, there will be less damage on our roads, and also reduce traffic congestion and accidents,” he said in the statement.
He urged the new chairman to work with SRB management to enhance the organisational structure for more efficient discharge of SRB’s duties and responsibilities.
Among those in attendance during this courtesy call were the Deputy Transport Minister (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep and MOTS permanent secretary Datuk Alice Jawan Empaling among others.
