SIBU: About 20,000 visitors gathered at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 to take part in the Sungkei Perdana Programme (community breaking of fast) yesterday (Mar 23).

Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the event drew not only residents of Sibu but also visitors from surrounding areas.

“This turnout is beneficial not just for fostering unity but also for local businesses, particularly Ramadan bazaars and nearby shops,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters at Sungkei Perdana Programme at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 here last night.

The Nangka assemblyman said that similar programmes were also organised in Kuching.

“This year we have a larger crowd compared to last year. The organisation of the programme has demonstrated the unity present in this country, involving participation from diverse communities of different races and religions,” he added.

The mass potluck picnic-style breaking of fast is Dr Annuar’s brainchild and was first organised in 2017.

It has continued to strengthen the racial unity and religious harmony among the various communities here.

Regarding the open house in conjunction with Eid 2024 here, Dr Annuar said that it will be held on either the fourth or fifth day of Eid at the Sibu Islamic Complex.

“We extend invitations to non-Muslim communities to partake in the festivities,” he added.

He also said that the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will attend a Hari Raya open house at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) on April 13.
