KUCHING: The 2nd Kuching International Tattoo Expo 2024 aims to foster openness and encourage the broader acceptance of tattoo culture, particularly among communities in Peninsular Malaysia.
Organising chairman Boi Skrang, while discussing perceptions surrounding tattooed individuals and artists, noted the growing acceptance within the Sarawak region.
He underscored tattoos as integral to the identity of Dayak people, especially within Borneo Island.
“Moreover, I’ve observed the rising popularity and acceptance of tattoos. I envision a future where hosting expos like this will contribute to greater societal openness and acceptance.
“Through this expo, my aim is also to foster openness among people in Peninsular Malaysia and encourage the acceptance of this culture as well,” Boi said after attending the miring ceremony that was held at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) hall here on Friday (April 5).
When questioned about the motivation behind organising such an event, he pointed out the desire to create a platform for like-minded individuals and overseas tattoo artists.
Tentative plans to schedule future expos between July and October were also disclosed.
Addressing the uncertainty surrounding the event’s location in subsequent years, he assured that diligent evaluation of future possibilities would guide decision-making processes.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the expo, he expressed optimism for a positive response from attendees, hoping for potential sponsorship from government ministers, contingent upon the event being perceived as a resounding success. Such support would facilitate the expansion of the venue for future editions.
Boi also explained the cultural significance of Iban teenagers traditionally receiving the Bunga Terung tattoo at the age of 13, symbolising the commencement of their journey, known as “berjalai”.
“This rite of passage entails exploration away from the familiar confines of their village or longhouse, with the tattoo serving as a tangible marker upon their return,” he explained.
He invited the public to come and observe the expo, which is held from April 5 to 7, with an entrance fee of RM15 per person.
