KUCHING: Villagers around Kampung Surabaya Hilir are encouraged to be an entrepreneur to complement the tourism initiatives made by the government in the area.
With the expected completion of the upgraded jetty at Kampung Surabaya Hilir in the third quarter this year, various tourism spots will be provided to attract more visitors to the area.
According to Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Abdul Rahman Junaidi, the upgrading work for a new concrete jetty was to replace the old, dilapidated and unstable wooden based jetty which was built in the 80s.
He added that aside from it benefitting the villagers, the jetty was also important for the local authority to include it in the Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHe).
“We want to bring the tourists from the golden triangle to the jetty here. From here, the tourists will be able to explore the activities in the village here as well as the surrounding villages such as Kampung Sourabaya Ulu, Kampung Gersik, and Kampung Boyan.
“They can walk up to the English Tea House, Cascading Water Fountain, to the Ibu Pertiwi flag pole, to the Darul Hana bridge and so on,” he said.
Abdul Rahman said this when met by the media after attending the Ihsan Ramadan programme at Surau Al-Kornia Kampung Sourabaya Hilir here today.
“Therefore, I suggest that the villagers take part in tourism activities that are provided by the state government, he alluded adding that the youth are encouraged to venture into the world of entrepreneurship to be self-reliant.
Meanwhile, touching on another project in the village here, Abdul Rahman stated that the Pentas Warisan Kampung Sourabaya Hilir was also nearing its completion and it is expected to be fully completed within two weeks from now.
This project which cost RM200,000 is expected to benefit about 600 villagers from Kampung Sourabaya, Kampung Gersik, and Kampung Boyan.
