KUCHING: More good news from the Premier.
Gedong is poised to see further transformation as the Sarawak government prepares to construct a deep seaport in Tanjung Embang.
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the deep seaport would be built on reclaimed land.
“We are planning to build a new port in Tanjung Embang, but it will not be situated on the cape. It will be at sea and we will carry out land reclamation for its construction due to the low tide in that area.
“Secondly, there would not be any dredging works involved considering the depth of the sea in the area. Moreover, this port will be connected to the coast, Samarahan and Gedong,” he said during the Gedong district Hari Raya gathering at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre here last night.
Abang Johari, who is the Gedong assemblyman, said he believed Sarawak is capable of developing a new deep seaport.
“If Osaka, Shanghai can do it. There is no reason why Kuching, Gedong cannot develop its own port.
“Thus, I hope that with more development in Gedong and the whole of Sarawak, the state will continue to prosper,” he added.
In 2022, it was previously reported that the state government is conducting a study to build a new deep seaport at Tanjung Embang to serve the southern region of Sarawak.
The Premier had witnessed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the proposed port development between Antwerp-Bruges Port and Hubline Berhad.
The Antwerp-Bruges Port is the second largest international container port in Europe and the 14th in the world while Hubline is a local company involved in bulk shipping logistics services.
Abang Johari said the entire Tg Embang will be developed by the ASSAR Group, an investment holding company wholly owned by the Sarawak government.
The proposed port development with the concept of integration with industrial development is one of the two deep sea ports that will be developed under the Post-Covid-19 Strategic Plan (PCDS 2030).
