MIRI: A total of 48 compound notices were issued here under an Integrated Mega Enforcement Activity focused on enforcing the Control of Tobacco Products Regulations 2004 (PPKHT 2004) from April 16 to 17.

The compounds, totalling RM12,750, were issued under Section 32B of PPKHT 2004, primarily for smoking offences in designated non-smoking areas. Additionally, 102 cartons of various cigarette brands were seized, valued at RM4,305.50.

“Led by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH), 60 enforcement officers from all 12 Health Division Offices in Sarawak participated in inspecting and monitoring 515 premises across various sectors including eateries, shopping centres, transportation hubs, and government buildings.” MoH said in a press release today.

The launching ceremony of the Integrated Mega Operation was held at the Audio-Visual Auditorium of Pustaka Sarawak Miri branch, attended by Dr. P. Raviwharmman Packierisamy, representing the deputy director of Public Health Sarawak, and chief of the Inspection and Legal Sector of MoH, Putrajaya Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Salleh.

“An interactive session addressed enforcement challenges and capacity-building plans, with a focus on teamwork among MoH enforcement officers in Sarawak. Certificates for the Best Public Health Law Enforcement Award at the State Level Sarawak 2023 were presented to the Miri Division Health Office.

The Miri Division Health Office urged the public, especially smokers, to respect non-smoking areas and adhere to regulations,” it added.

Smokers seeking assistance to quit were advised to visit health clinics or hospitals for cessation services. Complaints regarding violations of PPKHT 2004 can be lodged through the MoH’s Public Complaint Management System (SisPAA), providing necessary details for investigation.
