MIRI: Precautionary measures are in place to mitigate any potential risks, including the threat of haze affecting Malaysia following the eruption of Mount Ruang in Indonesia, said Deputy Health Minister Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni.
“There is currently no need for the public to wear masks as the eruption occurred at a considerable distance. However, we will issue cautionary warnings to keep the public informed and prepared,” he told reporters after attending Hari Raya open house hosted by the Miri Melanau Association today (Apr 20).
“As of now, there are no reports of severe haze from the eruption, and the situation remains under control,” he added.
The recent eruption has also impacted air travel to and from Sarawak, Sabah, and West Malaysia.
The release of volcanic ash, a serious hazard to aircraft, has led to numerous flight disruptions and cancellations. Airlines have had to reroute or cancel flights to ensure passenger and crew safety.
“The volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines and significantly reduce visibility, posing risks to safe flying in affected areas,” said an aviation expert.
