KUCHING: A woman from Bau was handed a fine of RM2,500 or spend a month in prison here Monday (Apr 22) for purchasing illegal lottery tickets.
Pia Tokel, 32, pleaded guilty to charges under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which were read before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.
Pia committed the offence inside a premise in Jalan Canna here, at around 12.35pm, on March 22.
A police team raided the premises on suspicion of illegal lottery activity there.
During the raid, police arrested Pia on suspicion of online gambling using a mobile phone.
Also seized were items such as a mobile phone, a printing machine, a piece of paper with lottery numbers printed on it and cash totalling RM643.
Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case.
