KUCHING: A pioneering operation for integrated Rabies enforcement in Sarawak will commence in Kuching from April 29 to May 3, 2024.

According to Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datuk Buckland Bangik, the efforts to combat the rabies epidemic in Sarawak must be prioritised to achieve ‘Zero Rabies’ by 2030.

“In line with this, the Sarawak government, through the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) alongside involved agencies, will initiate a pioneering operation in and around the Kuching area to identify pet dogs that have not been vaccinated and licensed.

“The primary reason for conducting this pioneering operation in Kuching is to eradicate the rabies epidemic in Sarawak and to achieve zero rabies by 2030,” he said.

He stressed this during a briefing on the ‘Preparation for the Integrated Rabies Enforcement Operation in Sarawak’ at Wisma SABATI here yesterday.

Datuk Buckland, who is also the SDMC deputy chairman, said that the pioneering operation will set a benchmark for future integrated operations to be held across all districts of Sarawak.

“When we embark on this pioneering operation, it means we need to do our best.

“From this operation, we will conduct a post-mortem to assess weaknesses that need improvement and then decide whether we can expand this operation to other districts throughout Sarawak,” he explained.

During the briefing session, he also advised the agencies involved to work as a team to avoid internal conflicts on the day of the operation
