KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 488 events have been approved by the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Supreme Committee for the upcoming 21st SUKMA in Sarawak.
National Sports Council of Malaysia (NSC) in its statement said the number of event offerings is divided into 236 men’s events, 217 women’s events and 35 mixed or open events for the 37 types of sports contested.
The event was decided in a meeting chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
“Each event must see the participation of athletes from a minimum of six states for it to be contested.
“The 21st SUKMA Games will be held across nine divisions throughout Sarawak, namely Kuching with 25 sports, Samarahan (two), Serian (one), Sri Aman (one), Betong (one), Sibu (three), Mukah (three), Bintulu (three), and Miri (six),” NSC said.
NSC added the organisers have identified five main sports villages to accommodate athletes from the 15 competing contingents, namely at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Laila Taib College in Sibu, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) UiTM Mukah Campus, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus, and Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) Miri.
During the meeting, NSC stated 108 cases of overlapping athlete registrations were also resolved with the states involved.
“The overlapping athlete registration has been resolved by NSC and 21st SUKMA Sarawak Secretariat through a mutual agreement among the participating states,” NSC added.
NSC also noted that the 100 days countdown to SUKMA 2024 will be held on May 9 and officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
