KUCHING: Quick action by the emergency response team (ERT) at a prominent shopping mall effectively extinguished a fire on a moving walkway (travelator) yesterday (May 1).
The incident happened around 5.30 pm when a small fire broke out at the end of the walkway, connecting the lower ground floor to the first parking level.
Firefighters from Padungan and Batu Lintang stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.
Upon arrival, they found that the flames had already been extinguished by the mall’s ERT with 12 fire extinguishers.
Subsequently, the team took control of the scene and conducted overhaul works to eliminate the risk of reignition.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
In response to the incident, the mall’s management issued an apology and assured the public that no one was harmed.
“To ensure safety, all businesses on the lower ground floor are temporarily closed to facilitate a thorough investigation,” the management said.
