SARATOK: The sport of gasing (top spinning) still attracts various segments of society, especially in Saratok, Sri Aman, Simunjan, Spaoh and Debak.

This was evident from the participation of many enthusiasts in the traditional sport at the Kalaka Gasing Pangkah Competition, vying for the Aidilfitri 2024 Trophy.

Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said that gasing remains a popular traditional game.

“Even though many modern sports exist today, gasing is actively played in the Kalaka area.

“The participation from outside areas such as Simunjan, Sri Aman, Spaoh, and Debak not only proves that gasing is still popular but also serves as a platform to strengthen ties, especially during the Aidilfitri celebration.”

He said this at the Kalaka Gasing Pangkah Competition organised by the Kenyalang Gasing Sports Club in collaboration with the Kalaka Assemblyman’s Service Center here, yesterday.

Mohamad strongly encourages the community to revive this traditional sport.

“Gasing is not just a sport but also a cultural heritage of the Malay community that must be preserved.

“The younger generation should continue this game so that gasing does not disappear with the tide of changing times, where many smart gadgets are easily accessible.”

At the same time, he reminded parents to monitor their children’s use of smartphones.

In the competition, a total prize of RM2,500 was offered.

Deputy chief of the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Kalaka Branch, Councillor Kasdi Pandi; chairman of the Kenyalang Gasing Sports Club, Harjam Jemain; as well as community leaders and village heads (KMKK), were also present.
