KUCHING: The Sarawak government has amended related laws to allow the private sector to participate in power generation activities, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said that Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) will play a key role in facilitating the private sector involvement in power generation.
“SEB is the main agency for energy development, although power generation can be carried out by the private sector, compliance with small equity participation is overseen by SEB.
“But they can supply energy either from solar energy or the other power generation and this will add to the energy production to the main grid where SEB is the main supplier.”
With the legislative aspects that have been made and amended, Abang Johari said it will contribute in Sarawak’s future development of renewable energy.
He said this in his speech during the Sarawak Energy’s Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri at Menara Sarawak Energy here on Thursday (May 2).
Meanwhile, SEB Group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili said that the Sarawak government’s progressive and visionary leadership has been instrumental to Sarawak Energy’s continued growth over the past century, from their decision to invest early in renewable hydropower to the introduction of key initiatives like the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy or SCORE and the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy or PCDS 2030.
“This has put us on the path towards realising our regional renewable energy powerhouse ambitions.
“However, to ensure that we continue to succeed and thrive – not only domestically, but also globally – the company must remain ahead of the curve by adopting new technologies, innovations, and solutions to futureproof the business.”
He then said that the company will continue to rely on the support of the Sarawak government in the area, as the government have already provided them with invaluable support – helping to forge close bilateral ties with our neighbours in Indonesia and Singapore as we continue to strive for an interconnected Asean power grid.
“Sarawak Energy has experienced significant growth since its establishment in 1921. It has been an honour for me to witness this company’s growth over the years and contribute to some of its major achievements.”
