KUCHING: The upcoming Performing Arts Centre will not only serve as a platform for local talents, but also an international hub for creative talents.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the centre will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that will attract global artists to perform in the state.
“Look at what is happening in Singapore, they have a contract with Taylor Swift that provides specific incentives to the artiste.
“When she performs in Singapore, all her fans will follow. This yields high returns in terms of cultural value, in addition to financial benefits.
“We want to do the same, but who would come if the performing arts centre is in a poor condition? Hence, it is crucial for the Performing Arts Centre to meet certain standards,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after the launching and handover ceremony of the Project Site of the Performing Arts Centre at the Old DUN Building here yesterday.
Additionally, Abang Johari also expressed confidence that the establishment of the centre would strengthen the tourism industry in Sarawak.
He said with Sarawak’s own airline company materialising, such infrastructure can encourage and boost the tourism and service industry in this state.
Meanwhile, he also hopes to see various performances involving local legendary stories such as the tales of Rentap, Puteri Santubong, and others, in addition to bringing international artistes here.
“We can create performances related to history or anything of interest to regional enthusiasts as attractions,” he said.
Subsequently, he envision the Performing Arts Centre to mirror the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London.
