KUCHING: The public are strongly advised to take any compounds issued during the integrated rabies operation seriously.

These compounds, issued by either the District Council or the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVS), are legal enforcement measures under the Sarawak Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) report, this matter is especially important as rabies cases are still recorded in Sarawak.

“The reluctance of many dog owners to vaccinate their pets before the operation highlights the seriousness of the situation.

“Owners who receive compounds have the option to apply for discounts from the DVS and District Council if they settle their payment within 14 days.

“As such, it is crucial for the public to view these compounds as a cautionary measure against the dangers of the rabies outbreak, rather than viewing them negatively,” it said.

During the third day of the operation in the Landeh area, the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) issued a total of 20 compounds for offenses related to lacking a dog license. Additionally, the DVS issued 22 compounds for failing to vaccinate dogs.
