Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol expressed his disappointment in Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen’s refusal to support the motion of appreciation to the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, the former Head of State.
“I was taken aback by Chong’s decision not to support the motion, as it is a symbolic gesture to express our collective appreciation for the late former Head of State.
“For instance, for the late Wong Ho Leng; we chose to show our appreciation for his services as the leader of the opposition who also served the country with his ideals and constructive criticism,” he said.
He said this to reporters on the sidelines of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 8).
Abdullah also expressed his disappointment and sadness at Chong’s surprising attitude and statement, which did not represent the polite manners of Sarawakians, who are not rude, and that such an attitude did not represent the cultural manners of a certain race.
“Wong Ho Leng was an aggressive opposition leader in the past, but the opposition leader’s consistent, constructive criticism had some positive impact.
“His insight compelled the governing party to refine their political and administrative endeavours, resulting in a more streamlined and effective approach and we should respect when someone leaves, respect the deceased’s family regardless of their political differences,” he said.
Abdullah also echoed Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh’s earlier statement that Chong should do some soul-searching.
“As elected representatives of the people, it is our duty to demonstrate a calm and mature attitude, avoiding any elements that could lead to slander, and such an attitude, I believe, is the cornerstone of our society and has no place in Sarawak,” said Abdullah.
