KUCHING: Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), has been appointed as the chef de mission (CDM) for the upcoming 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA), with MYSED permanent secretary Morshidi Frederick as the assistant CDM.
MYSED minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah introduced the appointed officials during the ‘Our Star, Our Pride’ – 100 Days Countdown ceremony for the 21st Sarawak Sukma 2024 at Pullman Hotel here on Thursday (May 9).
Abdul Karim announced the appointment of 40 assistant CDMs, 76 managers, and 138 coaches for the games, scheduled to take place across Sarawak from Aug 17 to 24.
“We aim for them to provide strong support and boost morale for Sarawak athletes as they prepare for the upcoming competition,” Abdul Karim stated.
Highlighting Sarawak’s goal of becoming the ‘runaway champion’, Abdul Karim urged all athletes to prepare diligently, sharpen their skills, and maintain high commitment to secure gold medals and elevate Sarawak’s reputation on the national stage.
He stressed that the Sarawak Sports Council and Sarawak Sports Corporation, through MYSED, have meticulously planned and prepared for this year’s Sukma, focusing on the athletes’ readiness to face challenges.
Preparations included a ‘Warriors Camp’ held at Putra Sentosa Retreat Camp, Sematan, involving 938 Sarawakian athletes to boost morale and motivation.
“The preparations also encompass medical support, athlete motivation camps, coaching camps, medal targeting workshops, gym programs, exposure programmes domestically and internationally, and more.”
Additionally, the games will feature 488 events across 37 sports, expected to bring together 12,619 participants, including 9,927 athletes and 2,692 officials.
