THE Business Events Sarawak, backed and funded by the Sarawak government, secured 95 business events from 2024 to 2028, worth RM 346.5 million in total economic impact.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said among the major international bids are Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen and Exhibition 2024; International Water Association World Water Congress and Exhibition 2028; and International Council on Monuments and Sites Triennial General Assembly 2026.
He said approximately RM188.3 million will be generated from direct delegate expenditure and revenue of RM20.8 million in taxes.
“This year, the business events industry will work towards reinforcing Sarawak’s position as the Legacy Capital of Business Events in Malaysia and Borneo.
“As of May 13 to 16 this year, Sarawak’s business events industry is headed to Incentive Travel, Meetings and Events (IMEX) Frankfurt in Germany under the leadership of my ministry’s deputy minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
“This will mark Sarawak’s second year of exhibiting with its pavilion at Incentive Travel, Meetings and Events IMEX Frankfurt, and one of the key highlights is the launching of Volume 2 Issue 2 of the International Journal of Business Events and Legacies,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech today.
For the record, in 2023, Sarawak had hosted 107 business events, generating RM372 million in Total Economic Impact.
The direct delegate expenditure amounted to RM202.1 million, while the state earned RM22.3 million (RM22,318,701.71) in taxes.
Some major events hosted in 2023 included 27th World Congress on Innovation and Technology 2023; Congress of the International Primatological Society 2023, with 1,200 delegates; and 24th Asia-Australasia Conference of Radiological Technologists 2023, with 1,000 delegates.
