MIRI: Datuk Gerawat Gala has urged younger members of the Kelabit community to actively engage in learning their traditional dances, cultural performances and songs to preserve the community’s cultural heritage.

The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) said the youth plays a crucial role in ensuring the continuity of the Kelabit culture.

“This is because without grooming the young, I’m afraid of no continuity. Hence, it is crucial for us to encourage them to learn our (Rurum Kelabit) culture,” he said during the 7th anniversary dinner of Rurum Kelabit Sarawak Culture and Line Dance Miri branch here last night (May 18).

The event, which celebrated the community’s heritage, also saw the presence of Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I (Tourism) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew and Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

Gerawat also announced a grant of RM8,000 to Rurum Kelabit Sarawak Cultural and Line Dance Miri, aimed at bolstering their efforts in cultural education and preservation.
