MUKAH: A 52-year-old self-employed man died in a road accident at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
Believed to be from Kampung Tellian Mukah, the man, known as Espejie Basri, was killed on the spot in the accident that
occurred at Km 71 Jalan Sibu-Bintulu (Sungai Duat Selangau).
Mukah District Police chief DSP Jimmy Panyau disclosed that the man was believed to be repairing his van before the fatal incident.
He added that the van was parked on the lane of a road that was diverted due to the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway when it was rammed from behind by a lorry.
“Initial investigations found that a lorry driven by a 56-year-old was heading to Sibu from Bintulu.
“When he reached the site, the lorry driver noticed that a van was parked on the same lane.
“Despite applying the brakes, he could not avoid the van. The collision
caused the the van to move onto the opposite lane and collide with an incoming lorry coming from Sibu,” he said.
Due to the impact, Espejie was thrown out of his van and died on the spot while the van was completely burnt.
“The remains of the deceased were sent to Mukah Hospital for a post-mortem. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) Land Transport Act 1987,” said Jimmy.
