KUCHING: Wesak Day will be observed by those of the Buddhist faith on Wednesday (May 22).

In the days leading up to the event the Kuching Buddhist Society (KBS), has been busy preparing for the annual celebration of the birth of Buddha.

KBS executive secretary Wong Ah Shui shared with New Sarawak Tribune on the history of Wesak Day.

“‘Wesak Day’ is actually an Indian phrase for the flowers blooming during the spring season around this time of the year as Buddha is of Indian origin.

“As for the Chinese Buddhists, we name it as ‘Buddha’s Day’ to signify the birth of Buddha and the concept of Nirvana,” he said.

In addition, Wong said Chinese Buddhism is made up of two core teachings, which are ‘Love’ and ‘Wisdom’.

“In the Chinese Buddhism teaching, the two core teachings are for us to apply in life and grow as a person.

“This is important because in this complicated world now, we need wisdom to solve problems and be loving or merciful in sharing our benefits with others.

“I really hope these teachings can be passed on to the public, especially the younger generation as they need more attention and love,” added Wong.

He reiterated that Buddhism relies on ‘Love’ and ‘Mercy’ as its core teachings.

“In Buddhism, we believe in ‘karma’ as your actions in the past could affect you in the future.

“Bottom line is, Buddhism leans more towards to finding one’s own success and happiness through the teachings within it,” he said.

Preparations for Wesak Day have also seen a higher demand for flowers.

“For other flowers like small stalks of roses or chrysanthemums, they would buy them as a compliment to the water lilies and lotus flowers,” she said.

As for the programmes organised by KBS, they will have around 20 stalls selling vegetarian food on Wednesday and activities such as sutra chanting, Buddha bathing, and performances by children from Bodhi Kindergarten (Philbert Sim Kindergarten) will be held at the society’s main hall and secondary hall respectively.
