KUCHING: People have been urged to continue serving and helping the needy through charity programmes especially during festive seasons.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said efforts by charitable institutions such as the Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng, should be emulated by others on providing assistance to the needy.
“Today, 71 families will be receiving food packages and cash assistance in conjunction with the upcoming celebration of Hari Gawai Dayak.
“We are indeed grateful for their continuous support as giving to the needy is a noble deed,” he said, adding the help is given so that they will have what they need to celebrate Gawai.
“I understand that this is not only for Gawai but also for Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Wesak Day, Deepavali, and other celebrations,” said Uggah during the handing over of Gawai gifts at Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng here on Sunday.
On a related note, he assured that the state government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will not neglect the less fortunate in the state.
“The GPS government always helps the less fortunate through the Welfare Department.
“To Sarawak Hung Nam Siang Tng, I congratulate you and hope you continue your charitable work like this. It is greatly appreciated by the GPS government because we are working together to develop the community,” Uggah added.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng chairman Tay Boon Sin said the distribution of food packages and cash assistance in conjunction with Gawai has been an annual activity of the institution since 2002.
“It is hoped that such activities will raise awareness among the community about the importance of helping one another, especially those who are less fortunate, and foster a spirit of community living in Sarawak,” he added.
