KUCHING: The issue of teacher shortages in secondary schools around Sarawak has been significantly reduced this year.
Sarawak Education director Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad stated that there are only 184 vacant teaching positions in secondary schools across Sarawak now.
“This number is very small, and we expect this situation to help improve student performance in the future.”
He said this during a press conference in conjunction with the announcement of the 2023 SPM examination results at the Sarawak Education Department here on Monday (May 27).
He added that most of the current teacher vacancies are in rural areas.
In addition, he mentioned that each year there are teachers who retire, whether it is mandatory retirement or optional retirement.
“We are waiting for the supply of teachers from the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM). Therefore, we see this as an ongoing process.”
Earlier, 2,577 teachers were placed in Sarawak throughout 2023 until March this year.
Federal Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh revealed that 1,247 teachers were placed in primary schools while 1,330 teachers were placed in secondary schools, all of whom are Sarawak-born graduates.
“KPM is confident that this effort can further reduce the gap in teacher vacancies for all schools in our country, especially in Sarawak.”
