KUCHING: The Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) supports the devolution of power over the Bintulu Port Authority to Sarawak, viewing it as a positive development.

Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen expressed his approval, saying: “What is good for Sarawak, Sarawak DAP will surely support.”

“I had a meeting with (federal Transport Minister) Anthony Loke on May 27 during his visit to Kuching and I am glad that the devolution of power over Bintulu Port Authority is progressing well,” he added in a statement.

Chong explained that when Loke first brought the matter to Sarawak DAP, “we were in full support of the idea.”

He noted that although Sarawak DAP is the opposition in Sarawak, their agenda consistently advocates for decentralisation and the devolution of power.

“Sarawak DAP’s general policy of devolution of power, especially in healthcare and education, was formally endorsed on Oct 26, 2014 as the ‘Bintulu Declaration – Towards Equal Partners’.”

Chong stressed the importance of checks and balances in state governance, as decentralisation and devolution of power would empower Sarawak with more authority.

“Take for example, the Bintulu Port Authority’s revenue for 2023 was more than RM800mil, far surpassing the revenues of other state ports in Sarawak.”

He stated that increased state revenue and greater responsibilities over port management necessitate stringent oversight to ensure the proper use of funds.

Chong stressed the need to ensure that the devolved power and resources benefit all Sarawakians and are not exploited by a few well-connected individuals.
