SIBU: Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) yesterday (May 31) awarded MC International scholarships for year 2023 to five students from University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here.
The recipients are Amy Ting Jia Jia, Amanda Ling Jun Qin, Houng Nai Yuan, Tay Miaw Khieng and Ting Ying Zhi.
Handing over the scholarships worth RM6,500 each was country representative of Malaysia, general manager of MC Kuala Lumpur Branch, Kosuke Makino.
Present to witness the scholarship awarding ceremony held at the UTS’ Senate Room were UTS vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid, UTS deputy vice chancellor Prof Dr Mohomammad Shahril Osman, general manager of Coordination Department, MC Kuala Lumpur branch Shotaro Mori, UTS director of Student Development and Services Centre Lu Yew King and assistant manager of Coordination Department, MC Kuala Lumpur Branch Shafura Ariff.
Speaking at the ceremony, Khairuddin expressed his heartfelt gratitude to MC for choosing UTS and awarding two consecutive years of MC International Scholarships to its students.
According to him, since 2022 and 2023, MC had awarded 10 scholarships worth RM65,000 to UTS students.
“We appreciate MC’s outreach to UTS in 2021, expressing a willingness to help needy Sarawakian students through the MC International Scholarships.
“It is impressive that a corporate investment giant like MC has the noble spirit to address the needs of the people of Sarawak. I deeply respect Japanese culture and its vision of globalisation.
“We hope MC will also work with us in other corporate social responsiblity (CSR) programmes, such as training and seminars for youth, community engagements, and other forms of corporate services,” he stated.
Noting that over the next six years, Sarawak would invest in clean and green energy, creating multibillion-dollar business opportunities Khairuddin encouraged and welcomed MC to play a significant role in the transformation.
Meanwhile, Kosuke, who also spoke, pointed out the MC International Scholarships aimed to foster human resources who would contribute to their home countries and the global society’s s development.
“We offer these scholarships to students from universities in developing countries, and five selected students from UTS are among the recipients. MC hopes that these UTS students will play a pivotal role in enhancing future economic and social development in Sarawak.
“To the recipients of the MC International Scholarships, stay focused on your studies and strive to achieve your goals,” he enthused.
Outlining brief overview of the company, Kosuke stated that MC was a global integrated business enterprise operating across virtually every industry.
“Our origins date back to 1870, and we established our Kuala Lumpur office in 1959,” he said, adding that since then, MC business in Malaysia had grown in parallel with the development of this country, spanning natural resources, food, automobiles, machinery and other sectors.
With an unwavering commitment to conduct business with integrity and fairness, he pointed out that MC actively contributed to a prosperous society.
“Our ongoing CSR initiatives in Sarawak include forest regeneration, the Japanese Film Festival, Youth Communication Camps and this university programme,” Kosuke added.
