KUCHING: The public has been advised to be cautious about the potential risk of artificial intelligence (AI) tampering and misinformation in the next general or state election.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian said misinformation is already spreading in elections in Mexico, India, and United States of America.
The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president pointed out that there is no reason why the abuse of AI will not happen in the state and general elections here.
“Even though the state election will be in 2026, it is still a long way to go and some of these AI issues are already happening. There was even an article claiming our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s luck is running out.
“Our focus right now is to educate the people so that they are not misled by what they see on the Internet,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at SUPP’s 65th anniversary celebration at Dewan Sa’ati this morning.
Asked if his party has formed a cybersecurity team to oversee the use of AI, Dr Sim said Kho Teck Wan, the SUPP Women chief and a cybersecurity expert, is constantly monitoring the new technology, adding that they are aware AI will be one of the many tools which will be used in elections.
“I think everyone is looking into it, maybe forming a team to counter AI.
“Not just SUPP, I think Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and other parties too will look into this,” he said.
