KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged the Public Works Department (PWD) to explore new methods for constructing elevated roads on the state’s peat soil.

He acknowledged the challenges faced with conventional road construction on peat, citing examples like the roads to Asajaya and Samarahan.

“These roads are like ‘bulan landas’ (uneven terrain).

“While maintenance is ongoing, the roads are not ideal for travel,” he said in his speech during the MoU signing ceremony between Innocement Sdn Bhd and PMW Industries Sdn Bhd at Grand Margherita Hotel here on Friday.

“We want to build elevated roads on peat soil. This will minimise maintenance and eliminate potholes,” he said.

This method also offers environmental benefits by minimising disruption to the peat, which is a crucial carbon store.

“By preserving the peat, we can potentially claim carbon credits as part of our carbon trading initiatives,” he added.

He also acknowledged the technical challenge of constructing pillars on peat soil.

“The engineers will need to devise innovative solutions for this aspect,” he said.

Abang Johari hoped that cement companies like Innocement would participate in this large-scale project.

“There’s enough work for everyone,” he said, stressing the urgency of the project to achieve developed state status by 2030.

“These roads would not only provide a smooth ride but also contribute to Sarawak’s green economy, similar to how green building ratings exist for sustainable construction.

“Perhaps we can develop a ‘green road index’ to assess these projects,” he said.
