KUCHING: The Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development is launching the Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP) for students in Form 3 to Form 5.

Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn stated that SEEP is a long-term plan to make Sarawak’s SPM results on par with the national average within five years.

It involves concentrated efforts by all parties that include the ministry, Yayasan Sarawak, and the Sarawak Education Department.

“SEEP aims to get more students into Forms 4 and 5, have more students go to college, and prepare graduates for future jobs,” he said during his address before officiating the Gawai Dayak Carnival’s education fair at Dewan Rais, Kampung Sungai Du’uh, Siburan on Friday (June 7).

Sagah added that the initiative is aligned with Sarawak’s Post Covid Development Strategy 2030.

“For SEEP to work, teachers, school leaders, parents, and students all need to work together.

“So, I urge all to give your fullest of cooperation to ensure that the programme which is taking place this year onwards will be a great success.”

Sagah, who is also the Tarat assemblyman, highlighted that his ministry’s primary focus remains on English language proficiency and STEM education since its establishment in 2017, with concentrated efforts starting at the lower primary school level.

“In 2019, the Sarawak government took on the challenge from the federal government to become the first state in Malaysia to fully implement the teaching of science and mathematics in English through the Dual Language Programme Sarawak.

“Now in its fifth year, the Sarawak government remains dedicated to this policy.”

Sagah then stressed that English is the international language for business and science, providing students with greater access to STEM resources and enabling broader international collaboration, making them more competitive.

“Therefore, it is vital for everyone, especially teachers and parents, to understand the importance of excelling in both STEM and English.”

The education fair which runs for two days, June 7 to June 8 involves 17 agencies and higher education institutions including the Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS).
