BINTULU: Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Datuk Sri Stephen Rundi Utom has warned motorists against making illegal U-turns along the Pan Borneo Highway.
He said most accidents were caused by irresponsible actions on the part of motorists, especially during the festive season.
Therefore, he reminded the public who use the highway to return to their respective destinations after the festive holidays to drive prudently and not to make illegal U-turns.
“I understand that there are some areas such as Roban, Saratok and so on that have this problem,” he said after attending to fire victims at Rumah Ugop Umpin, Kuala Sigu, Pandan, Sebauh, on Friday.
At the same time, the Kemena assemblyman requested that relevant parties organise an awareness programme to explain the difference between normal roads and highways.
In a separate issue, Dr Rundi urged Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to speed up the supply of electricity to the Ulu Pandan area in Sebauh.
“I hope that SEB will speed up the delivery of power supply here because the poles are already there.
“This project already has all the necessary things because the allocation has been channeled, the only problem is the road,” he said, adding that the Sarawak government will help in terms of road completion to ensure the delayed project can be completed.
He said discussions had been held with the Bintulu Development Board (BDA) and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to continue building the road up to Ulu Pandan with Jelalong, Tubau and Sangan with an estimated allocation of about RM1.17 billion.
