SARIKEI: A peaceful night’s rest turned into a nightmare for undocumented immigrants here as Immigration enforcement officers came knocking on their doors in the wee hours of Friday (June 7).

In an operation codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’, the Sarikei Immigration Enforcement Unit raided seven locations around Sarikei and Bintangor, targeting rental rooms, houses and shared residences at construction sites.

Acting on information and gathered intelligence, the team examined a total of 29 individuals for their documentation and of these, 13 were taken into custody.

The detainees, all men of various foreign nationalities, were found to be overstaying, lacking valid travel documents and lacking valid permits to stay in Malaysia.

All of them are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.

Following this, the department assured that continuous efforts will be made to locate and arrest foreigners and employers violating immigration laws.

The public is encouraged to report any information regarding undocumented migrants in their areas through online channels or directly to the nearest Immigration Enforcement Office.
