KUCHING: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation is studying the suitability of small modular reactors (SMR) in Malaysia.

Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said it follows that there are countries that have already adopted the nuclear reactor.

“However, for now, we are still looking into it and it is still not certain whether it will be used in the nation or not,” he said after attending the closing ceremony of Pesta Regatta Sejijak 2024 at Kampung Sejijak Jetty here Sunday.

Explaining, Fadillah who is Deputy Prime Minister, said aside from looking at whether or not it can be used, his ministry is also examining the risks that need to be addressed as well as the steps that need to be taken to deal with the risks and others.

“We are doing an overall suitability study from the aspects of technology, safety and the impact of nuclear use on the environment including the cost… everything needs to be studied,” he said.

An SMR produces a large amount of low-carbon electricity on a reduced footprint.

As described by the International Atomic Energy Agency, SMRs have a power capacity of up to 300 MW(e) per unit, which is approximately one-third of the generating capacity of traditional nuclear power reactors.
