BAU: The BiPuot Longhouse located in Kampung Barieng should preserve its original traditional longhouse identity to ensure it remains a cultural landmark.
Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said it is important to maintain the longhouse’s authentic construction and design.
“I believe this preservation is crucial for the longhouse so that it can serve as a heritage site and attract visitors from beyond the state,” he said during the 50th anniversary celebration of the BiPuot Longhouse (Barieng) Singai here, recently.
Henry, who is the Tasik Biru assemblyman, said his office would also seek funding of RM200,000 from the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR).
“These funds would be used to build ceilings and restrooms to transform the longhouse into a homestay.
“This initiative aims to provide visitors the unique experience of living in a Bidayuh longhouse,” he said.
The three-day celebration, which began last Friday, was organised as part of the Gawai Dayak Festival while celebrating and appreciating the Bidayuh traditional heritage.
Among those present were Bau District Officer Constantine Gerald David Jonas, UNIFOR deputy director Shimon Belenko William, Kuching Division Bidayuh Community Temenggong Atok Derop, Bau District Bidayuh community Pemanca Robert Tom Juin, Singai Area Penghulu Morris John Siren, Kampung Barieng community leader Barieng Felix Runya and Pewaris Adat Asal Singai (PA’AS) chairman Edid Ngupel.
