KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), a comprehensive vision to ensure a sustainable, clean and prosperous energy future for Sarawak, during the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition (APGH) 2024 held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
The Premier said that by embracing the principles of innovation, inclusivity and global best practices, the SET-P envisions a multi-dimensional approach that integrates policy, regulation, technology, infrastructure and community engagement.
“Some refer to this concept as ‘hypernomics’, highlighting the transformative impact of leveraging advanced infrastructure and fostering robust community involvement.
“Hypernomics envisions a synergistic framework where these elements work in harmony, driving down costs and significantly enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our energy transition efforts,” he said when officiating the APGH 2024 at BCCK here today.
He pointed out that in order for the state to realise its vision, Sarawak needed to put its focus on four main sectors: power, transportation, industry and building (which includes residential and commercial).
In light of this, he said that the success of this policy relies on several key enablers that will propel the state forward into a sustainable future.
He pointed out that Sarawak needed a robust policy and regulatory support to navigate the transition while ensuring continued economic growth as well as mobilising resources through public-private partnerships, financing incentives and strategic alliances which are essential for accelerating the transition.
“Other than that, we also need to foster collaboration, innovation and technology development within our infrastructure. These are crucial to facilitate the transition smoothly along with investing in education and training to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of driving and sustaining our energy transition.
“Finally, raising public awareness through education and advocacy initiatives is essential to foster demand and support for our transition initiatives. Together, these enablers will chart our course towards a cleaner, more prosperous future for all,” he said.
Abang Johari also stated that to facilitate this transition, the Sarawak Government will focus on eight types of energies and technologies such as Renewable Energy (RE), Hydrogen, Energy Efficiency, Green Mobility, Synthetic fuels, Bioenergy, Oil & Gas and Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS).
