KUCHING: The festive spirit of Eid al-Adha filled the air at Medan Niaga Satok Community Market as residents thronged the venue to buy ingredients for the celebration.
Traditionally celebrated on the 10th of Zulhijjah in the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha is a joyous occasion for Muslims worldwide.
This year, the market bustled with activity as early as 6 am, with many stalls even selling out by 2 pm.
The high demand presented a golden opportunity for traders selling essential items like chicken, meat, fish and vegetables.
“Sales during this Eid are definitely better than other celebrations,” said Mohd Dzul Fitri Ismadi, a 31-year-old trader, attributing the surge to residents opting to celebrate at home this year.
Reassuring customers, Mohd Dzul stressed that there was sufficient supply of chicken and meat to meet everyone’s needs.
“We can always get more from our suppliers, so there’s no need to worry about shortages,” he added.
Yusuf Morni, another trader at the market, echoed Mohd Dzul’s sentiments regarding supply.
“Prices remain affordable despite the high demand.
“There haven’t been any hikes – Australian beef knuckle is still RM34 per kg, and fresh chicken remains at RM12 per kg. We’re not limiting purchases either,” he said.
Yusuf reported brisk sales, particularly in the two days leading up to Eid.
“Today alone, I’ve sold around 400kg of meat and 200 fresh chickens,” he added.
The festive cheer extended beyond the market.
Jaafar Abong, a 69-year-old shopper, thanked the state government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leadership for ensuring that essential goods remained affordable.
“The initiatives of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and local leaders have truly benefited the people,” he said.
Lokman Hussain, 38, another shopper, was excited about the prospect of sharing the festive spirit with friends from different backgrounds.
“Every year, we invite friends from all walks of life to celebrate Eid al-Adha with us.
“We love seeing their happy faces when they enjoy our traditional dishes,” he said.
Lokman’s wife prepares a delectable spread for their guests, featuring curries, sweet and sour dishes, rendang, and even lemang.
