KUCHING: The 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) is more than just a sports competition; it is a platform for testing Sarawakian athletes and developing talents in the nation.
In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed that SUKMA could significantly contribute to the development of sports nationwide, aligning with one of the objectives in the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030: talent development.
“We know that organising SUKMA requires a significant budget. Others surrendered when Sarawak was asked to host.
“Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah met with me, and I told him that for the development of sports across Malaysia, Sarawak could be the host.
“This includes sports talent, which is why I said, let’s contribute to the development of sports talent across Malaysia, not just for Sarawak but for our fellow states,” he said.
He said this when officiating the last leg of the Baton Relay Programme for the 21st edition of Malaysian Games (Sukma XXI) held at Kuching Waterfront here today (June 23).
Additionally, Abang Johari pointed out that the champions from SUKMA will represent Malaysia.
“This embodies our spirit in Sarawak – a united front. Naturally, since Sarawak is hosting, we want to see Sarawak become the ‘Runaway Champion’,” he said.
He also highlighted Sarawakian powerlifting champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, urging athletes to follow his example.
“If Bonnie can be an example for everyone, I believe all Sarawak athletes have the potential to be like Bonnie,” he added.
