KANOWIT: The Kanowit Water Supply Phase 2 project is currently at 85.2 per cent and is expected to be completed by December this year.
According to Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, its scheduled progress is at 92.6 per cent.
“We are seven per cent behind the scheduled progress, but to me, it is not bad,” he said when met by reporters during a series of working visits to several project sites for the project here on Monday (June 24).
The project, which commenced in August 2019 costing RM78mil, will improve water pressure and reliability of water supply in Durin, Kanowit, and surrounding areas when completed.
“The project, implemented by the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), will benefit residents in Sibu, including Sibu Jaya, Nibong Tada, and Machan areas too,” he said.
He noted that the project scope involves the construction of the Durin booster station with a capacity of 1.5 million litres per day (MLD), a 3.5 MLD elevated water tank at Bukong Jagoi, and the installation of 55 km-long distribution pipes from the Salim water treatment plant in Sibu to Kanowit.
“The pipeline installation is almost completed with only 5km left for implementation. Hopefully, it will go on smoothly, and by December this year, it should be fully completed.”
Earlier, Julaihi, accompanied by his deputy Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, visited the New Bukong Jagoi 3.5ML Reservoir, New Durin Booster Station with 1.5ML Ground Suction, and Pipeline B for the Kanowit Water Supply Phase 2 project.
