KUCHING: The National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak has received a complaint about an online car sales fraud where the name of JL68 Sdn Bhd was misused by fraudsters.
In its statement, the fraudsters used car pictures belonging to JL68 Sdn Bhd’s and conducted a fraudulent car sales promotions at a very attractive low prices on the Telegram messenger application.
“Many consumers were enticed by these attractive prices and made deposits for their desired cars.
“JL68 Sdn Bhd posted about this issue on their Facebook page to alert the public but was soon taken down by Facebook as it was deemed unauthorised to do so.
“Subsequently, they received more than 10 calls from deceived consumers stating that they had made deposit payments to the account number (2005037000042905 – MBSB BANK) under the name SITI AISYAH ARMAN,” it said.
MTPN Sarawak advised all consumers not to buy expensive items online and to avoid making payments to a personal bank accounts of sellers.
“For everyone’s information, many fraud syndicates use mule accounts to conduct these transactions.
“We would like to warn users never to rent or give their bank accounts to others and additionally, do not provide personal information such as full name, address, identification card number, or photos of your identification card to unknown parties,” it stated.
MTPN Sarawak will continue to work with relevant authorities and departments to protect consumer rights.
“The Smart Consumer Collaboration Programme will also be implemented in schools to raise awareness among students and consumers,’ it added.
