KUCHING: The government has assured retirees that their pension payouts will be adjusted to keep pace with salary reviews for civil servants under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA).

This aligns with Section 3 of the Pension Adjustment Act 1980 (Act 238), which mandates adjustments to pensions whenever there’s a salary revision for serving civil servants.

Civil servants interviewed by Suara Sarawak expressed their approval of the pension adjustment.

It’s a positive and appropriate step. Rising civil servant salaries often lead to a higher cost of living, and pensioners need the same protection to avoid being financially squeezed. This also acknowledges their service and contributions. However, the coordination process must be meticulous and fair. Additionally, the government should ensure periodic reviews based on a clear formula that considers inflation and the rising cost of living.

The realignment will definitely help retirees cope with the increasing cost of living. I hope the government will extend continuous support to civil servants, including retirees, in recognition of their contributions to national development.

The rising cost of living necessitates an increase in pension payouts. This will undoubtedly benefit retirees and demonstrates the government’s concern for their well-being even after retirement.

It’s crucial to establish a clear method for adjusting pensions to ensure future benefits for retirees. The government should prioritise these payments as civil servants have dedicated their service to the country. However, a thorough examination is needed to ensure fairness and avoid any discrepancies.
