SIBU: The government aims to establish itself as a global hub for game development innovation, fostering the future of gaming through teamwork and technology, said Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

The Deputy Minister of Digital said that one of his ministry’s visions was to transform the game development scene by disseminating knowledge and leveraging the latest technology.

“Our mission is ambitious. We aim to boost the gaming industry by encouraging the exchange of ideas, showcasing new technologies, and celebrating gaming culture through educational sessions.

“This isn’t just a goal—it’s a promise to elevate the gaming industry to new heights,” he said during his speech at the International Game Development Conference 2024, held at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor’s Hall at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) today (July 6).

“This includes providing support to promote esports, particularly in terms of the need to regulate and recognise esports in this country and Sarawak.

“Perhaps we need a regulatory framework for esports to cover areas like policy and regulation recognition, employment, economic impact and the effect of esports on those involved,” he added.

Regarding the conference, Khairuddin said that the event was not just about sharing knowledge and showcasing technology; it was about building a community.

“A community of passionate individuals dedicated to advancing the field of game development, eager to learn from each other, and committed to making a positive impact on the world through their work.

“I encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity. Engage with the speakers, ask questions, participate in discussions, and connect with your fellow attendees. The relationships you build and the knowledge you gain here can be a catalyst for your future success,” he added.

Also present was the organising chairman, Ts. Jackie Ting Tiew Wei.
