KUCHING: The Malaysia Autism Swimming Festival (MASF) 2024 serves as a vital platform for educating and training autistic children through swimming therapy.

Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the festival’s role was to raise autism awareness and building confidence among children.

“Under the Department of Social Welfare (JKM), we have organised awareness programmes about autism. This festival is unique because it involves taking the children to the sea to swim.

“I have seen first-hand in the US how effective swimming therapy can be for relaxation and confidence-building for those with autism,” she said during the event’s opening at Damai Beach Resort yesterday.

This programme was helpful for families whose parents could teach other families.

“One parent alone cannot handle a child with autism, which is why our awareness programmes are crucial. They provide parents and families with the knowledge to manage and support their children,” she said.

She also referenced the successes of individuals with autism in various fields.

“There are specialists who can assist not just ordinary people. As a Ministry, we are committed to this cause,” she added.

Meanwhile, Hawary Sports Centre director Hamlatul Hawary Azizan highlighted the specific challenges faced by participants with autism, such as sensory issues and difficulty in adapting to new environments.

“Despite these challenges, they were successfully overcome during the festival. It crucial that individuals with autism are given the same opportunities as their neurotypical peers,” he added.

This year MASF recorded the highest attendance, with 35 participants aged between 7 to 23 years.
